Popularity contest.
Like any field, design is one in which superstars emerge. But for every Jessica Hische, there are countless others grinding it out in the trenches, hoping to make a name for themselves and forge a career from their talents. It is those creatives that AAF Cleveland has in mind for its September professional development luncheon. On Wednesday, September 19, Jeff Finley — VP of Go Media and founder of the Weapons of Mass Creation Fest — will answer the question many have asked: What makes a designer popular?
To promote Finley’s appearance, Stephanie Landes and I teamed up to design promotional materials for AAF Cleveland, including the ad you see above. To reinforce the idea of popularity within design, we used the clickable heart found on the creative work-in-progress site Dribbble. The myriad users of this basketball-themed community post “shots,” which are snippets of what members are working on. The more “likes” a shot gets — represented by clicking a heart-shaped icon — the more popular it (and the designer) gets.
